The mission of FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano, usually referred to in English as the Italian National Trust) is twofold: on the one hand, it is to promote a tangible culture of respect for Italy's natural heritage, art, history and traditions; and on the other, it is to protect a legacy that forms a fundamental part of the roots and identity of the Italian people. FAI is a national, not-for-profit trust that was set up in 1975 and has since gone on to save, restore and open to the public numerous fine examples of Italy's artistic and natural heritage.
On 28 April 1975, Giulia Maria Mozzoni Crespi, Renato Bazzoni, Alberto Predieri and Franco Russoli officially established FAI, a non-profit trust based on an idea by Elena Croce and intended to emulate the good work being done by the National Trust in England.
FAI and its members are daily enganged in the protection and enhancemnet of Italian cultural and natural heritage, in the education of the collectivity, in the supervision and intervetion of the territory.
Knowledge, substance, coherence, independence, quality. Taking our inspiration from these five principles, FAI operates for the people and with the people, leveraging all the strengths that the cultured individuals who constitute FAI's membership can muster towards a common cause.
On the basis of its Statute, FAI's managerial infrastructure is composed of an Honorary President, a President, two Vice-Presidents, an Executive Vice-President, a Director General and a Board of Management.
Our balance sheet
To ensure maximum transparency in the management of the Trust's finances (FAI is a non-profit organisation), each year FAI's balance sheet is certified by a third-party auditor.
FAI operates throughout Italy from its headquarters in Milan and its office in Rome, and also through an extensive network of volunteers organised into 116 Delegations, which are managed by 20 Regional Executives.
The galaxy of sites and mini-sites that orbit around Fondoambiente.it is expanding all the time, giving rise to a veritable virtual network that helps to spread news and information about FAI's activities and values across the web.
The FAI 200
